Tall Stories and Tasty Food for free?
Hampshire County Council’s Allen Gallery in Church Street, Alton has a couple of shows that are definitely worth a visit in September. Opening on Saturday, 12 September (until Saturday, 31 October 2009) is a new exhibition about Myths and Legends.
This exciting new family friendly exhibition will show some of the many wonderful stories that have developed into myths and legends. Visitors will be able to explore captivating stories from around the world, climb into the head of a dragon and solve the Minotaur’s maze, visit an Egyptian tomb and unravel the story of the God Osiris, build your own totem pole and find out about Native American myths all in one mythical exhibition.
The second offering is a show entitled The Good, the Bad and the Beautiful which is showing between 1 - 26 September. It features an exciting collection of photographs by Lucy Hilken showing some of the weird and wonderful mushrooms that grow in the local area. Fungi come in many shapes, sizes, colours and flavours; some are delicious and others would kill you! Many of the mushrooms in this exhibition have quirky names that reflect the appearance of the mushroom such as the ‘Jelly Ear’, the ‘Lawyers’ Wig’, the ‘Amethyst Deceiver’ and the ‘Penny Bun’. Lucy Hilken has developed a passion for eating and photographing fungi over recent years. During the Autumn months many happy hours are spent come rain or shine scouring the area where she lives for interesting specimens. This is an exhibition for the whole family to enjoy.
The Allen Gallery is open from Tuesday to Saturday, from 10am to 5pm and admission is free.
