April Garden
April is one of my favourite times in the gardening calendar. The fruit trees are in blossom, the Tulips are upright and giving their best and the hardy biennials are giving their all.
The sounds of summer are close by now, the birds are singing in the air, the sunshine is becoming warmer and all life has returned to the garden.
Since the clocks have now gone forward we all can spend more time doing those jobs that really set a garden off, like removing those pesky weeds that have already begun to overrun your beds and tying in the new lengths of climbing rose to form that shape you’ve always wanted.
Right now is the best time to sow tender vegetables like chilli peppers, pumpkins and courgettes under glass, and when they are ready, sow them outside in a shallow trench protected from hungry mice by chicken wire.
Now that the new stems of Roses have really started to grow skywards, keep a close eye on their tips for attacks by aphids, if any colonies are found wipe or spray the tips with fairy liquid to prevent any further damage to the plant.
