There are some exciting new drama projects happening in the Alton area run by Casting Light, a company who specialise in issue based drama workshops, tackling vital topics such bullying, disability awareness and drug awareness.
The company is run by Imogen Rayner and Laura Dymock. Laura designs and runs the workshops and has been inspired through her work in hundreds of schools and on many different projects, witnessing over and over the power of drama to make a difference or to raise awareness of important issues.
Through her workshops she encourages young people to further develop their awareness of the world around them and their place within their community, using improvisation, discussion and role play. She also brings with her to the school inspirational speakers who have been affected by disability, prejudice or bullying and who have overcome or achieved beyond their difficulties.
One of Casting Lights workshops is simply entitled CHOICES:
‘Children between the ages of eleven and sixteen have more choices to make during these years than at any other time. Through the Choices workshops we help young people realise the power of their choices and the impact that they can have on their lives. We aim to raise their awareness and also to empower them in the realisation that by making the right choices it can have a positive affect on their future. Again through the use of improvisation young people create powerful pieces of drama that highlight the outcome of different scenarios based around topics including alcohol, drugs, and social behaviour. Within primary schools we focuses on bullying, behaviour towards others and choices such as healthy eating or simply looking when you cross the road.’
Laura and Imogen are excited to be starting a series of workshops in the school they both attended, Amery Hill Comprehensive in Alton. Providing them with workshops on bullying and disability awareness.
‘Our workshops really make a difference and develop young people’s awareness of the world around them and the impact that their choices have on their future. We always like to follow up our workshops with a free repeat visit and make sure the teachers are left with a worksheet on their chosen issue so the class can be reminded a few weeks later of the issues raised.’
