Victorian Cricket bowled Over The Wall
At the Victorian Cricket day on the 29th June 2008 nine local teams of men and women will dress in period costume and compete with authentic bat, ball and stumps and raise money for locally based children’s charity Over The Wall.
Over The Wall provides week long residential activity camps for children aged 8-17 who are affected by serious and life limiting illnesses. They have been based in Alton since their establishment in 1999 and to date have touched the lives of an estimated 2,500 children.
The charity cricket match is one of the highlights of the Alton summer and this year will also be the climax the Jane Austen Regency Week organised by Alton Chamber of Commerce. The cricket match, played on The Butts, raises money each year for a local charity, nominated by the participating teams, and this year Over The Wall were the lucky charity pulled from the hat.
Traditionally the Mayor of Alton bowls the first ball and the 9 teams then compete in a league based play off and then a final between the two highest scoring teams. Last year’s winners, The Eight Bells, will be defending the Bushy Leaze trophy.
The day will provide entertainment for the whole family with the cricket match starting at 10.30, refreshments, a beer tent, traditional stalls and a variety of activities for children of all ages. Raffle tickets will be on sale before the event and on the day with a first prize of 500 Guineas.
