Tips to keep your premiums low from Jason Jarratt of A-Plan Insurance
With the financial squeeze continuing, everyone is looking to save money on day to day necessities. Motor insurance is compulsory for all drivers, but there are ways to save on costs. Here are my top tips:
1 Only insure named drivers. Generally, the fewer drivers the cheaper the cover – though insurers favour married couples so include your spouse!
2 If you can keep your car off the road at night – it’ll cut your premiums. Ideally keep it in a locked garage.
3 Only insure for the mileage you actually need. Don’t insure for 15,000 miles a year if you only drive 5,000. But no false economies here either – make sure you have your real mileage covered or your insurance might not pay out.
4 Are adult children still on your policy? If yes and they’re not driving your car any more, take them off. Adults under 25 are among the most expensive drivers to insure!
5 Opt for a voluntary excess, to cut your premium. But beware, you’ll probably also have a compulsory excess – some policies have eye-watering excesses. Only choose an excess you can afford to cover from your own funds.
6 Don’t pay for business use if you won’t use it!
7 Ask a broker to shop around for you – the broker will have access to schemes not available on comparison sites and can provide advice on the cover you really do and do not need.
