Alresford Show 2009

Looking forward to the return of Alresford's greatest Show.
Alresford Agricultural Show on Saturday 5th September 2009 at Tichborne Park
Alresford’s Big Value Family Day Out
Alresford Show offers a great value for money whole day out for the entire family and this year, for the first time in its 101 years, all children will go FREE. There is loads of free entertainment inside the Show and a packed Main Ring timetable of attractions to enjoy.
Alresford Show is the Society’s flagship event and a local institution. It is a firm favourite with families and the local community and usually draws crowds of around 15,000 but organisers are looking forward to a blockbusting year this year. The Show is held on Saturday 5th September, at Tichborne Park, near Alresford, between 9am and 6pm.
Secretary Gussie Raimes said "We look forward to coming back with a bang on September 5th 2009 - a fresh start for our new Century". Its centre-piece attraction is a display by the world-famous Band of the Brigade of Gurkhas and the attendance of the Winchester Gurkha Museum. There is an exciting new Feature Ring with new show jumping competitions and bird of prey flying displays. An entirely new activity to try will be climbing one of the Park's very fine trees, with arborventure.
You will notice a change in the layout as Tichborne Park is opened up for the first time; the Show is able to spread further across its beautiful Parkland setting, enhancing the opportunities to picnic under the trees and enjoy the locally produced food and drink on sale.
Some of the best livestock in the South, including cattle, sheep, pigs, goats and alpacas will be on show and take part in the Grand Parade in the main ring. There will also be many familiar much-loved attractions such as the magnificent Heavy Horses, carriage driving, vintage machinery, ferrets, birds of prey, a horticultural show, plus over 220 trade and craft stands.

Children’s entertainment includes cooking workshops, trampolines, a climbing wall and Punch & Judy. Everyone is encouraged to bring along their dogs and enter them on the day into either the Companion Dog Show or the Dog Gymkhana. Hampshire food, beer from The Flower Pots Inn Brewery and drinks by Alresford wine-merchant Naked Grape will be on sale around the 30-acre site.
Put the date in your diary; Alresford Show on Saturday 5th September in Tichborne Park, Alresford. 9am to 5.30pm. Keep an eye on the website www.alresfordshow.co.uk for details of discounts on tickets purchased in advance. We look forward to the return of Alresford's best show yet

Dramatic Recovery for Historic Tichborne Park
Site of the Alresford Agricultural Show

It is hard to imagine now the heavily rutted mud that engulfed Tichborne Park, the location of the Alresford Show back in September. Such devastation was wreaked after a month of rain in August, and a torrential 34mm of rain which fell after 5pm the evening before the gates opened to the public. The tragic last minute cancellation of the event saw the Alresford & District Agricultural Society face a loss of income in the region of £100,000.

So what is the future of the Alresford Show, and what has been done to prevent the same happening again?

Secretary Gussie Raimes explains “We have spent the winter hard at work reviewing and reworking our layout, repairing the ground, producing a traffic management plan and exhaustive wet weather contingencies. We launched an appeal and Life Membership campaign, and the target was to raise £50,000 in order to make improvements to the showground and layout. “We are enormously grateful, and overwhelmed at the generosity and support of the public and exhibitors. The new Layout is very exciting and opens up new opportunities for us”

The most significant change is to the Parkland itself. The wooden post and rail fencing that runs along the tree lined roadway avenue is coming out, returning the beautiful historic parkland to the open setting it would have been in the 17th Century for the Tichborne family.

Fundraising continues. On Sunday 23rd August Sarah Richardson and Sue Alexander are opening their NGS Recommended Gardens, The Hyde and Hill House in Old Alresford between 1.30pm-5pm Entrance £3 each or £5 for both, and teas, plants and produce are on sale.
Alresford Show on Saturday 5th September will see a new layout, all children will get in free, and the centre-piece attraction is a display by the world-famous Band of the Brigade of Gurkhas and the attendance of the Winchester Gurkha Museum. It promises to be an exciting and great value family day out. Further information www.alresfordshow.co.uk or 01962 738748.
