TRELOAR STUDENTS SHOW THEIR ART IN DORCHESTER ABBBEY
Every artist’s dream – to have their work put on public show – was fulfilled for Treloar College students recently in the prestigious surroundings of Dorchester Abbey.
‘Gallery space’ was provided at the 12th century Dorchester Abbey as part of the 2007 Dorchester-on-Thames Arts Festival. It enabled 24 students, aged 18-21, from the specialist Hampshire-based college for physically disabled students to display mixed media artwork created in their A-level and B-Tec studies.
“It was the first time we have been able to exhibit work from the whole of the college and we are very grateful to Rebecca Hind and the Dorchester Arts Festival organisers for giving our students this opportunity,” said Verity Gwinnett, art tutor at Treloar College in Holybourne, Alton.
“The exhibition was well received and we are very much hoping that the display of artwork by Treloar College students will now become an annual feature of the Dorchester Arts Festival,” she added.
Established artist Rebecca Hind, who specialises in sacred landscapes and is a teacher of traditional English watercolour painting in Dorchester, helped hang the students’ work and curate the exhibition.
Treloar College exhibits included self portraits, abstracts, collage, and some photographic work created in conjunction with the University College for the Creative Arts in Farnham. Disabled students at Treloar College are encouraged to reach their creative potential through the use of a wide variety of media and resources.
Some of the students with work on display were: Amy Thomas, Georgina Green, Cieran Kiely, Ruth Price, Michaela Dickinson, Joe Sroka, Fiona Kayitesi, Leanne Tasker, Martin Bell, Adam Taylor, Amy Pawley, and Lana Gray.
The 2007 Dorchester-on-Thames Arts Festival programme included music, dance, drama, art and book readings with 34 events packed into the period between 22 June - 1 July.
